MAKING LEGENDE
A Documentary Film by Nikita Efimov
For several years, filmmaker and editor Nikita Efimov followed Kirill Serebrennikov and his team on a journey into the world of Sergey Paradjanov.
The search led them through Georgia and Armenia to the places where Paradjanov lived and where he created his own mythology. The film visits his legendary home in Tbilisi and the Paradjanov Museum in Yerevan, offering a window intoan extraordinary artistic universe of collages, photographs, drawings, costumes, and works created during his imprisonment.
For Kirill Serebrennikov, it was important not simply to tell Paradjanov’s story, but to rebuild his world. During their travels, the team collected authentic objects, costumes, and everyday items that later became part of the production. The atmosphere of Tbilisi itself became one of the essential elements of LEGENDE.
The film also follows rehearsals at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, where an international ensemble gradually becomes immersed in Paradjanov’s paradoxical universe. Debates and discoveries, doubts and revelations, tears, laughter, and moments of shared happiness accompany the birth of the production.
The documentary culminates in the premiere of LEGENDE at Ruhrtriennale 2024 and becomes both a chronicle of its creation and a journey in the footsteps of Sergey Paradjanov.
