Ilya Shagalov is a video designer, multimedia artist and stage director based in Berlin. He began his artistic career at the Moscow Art Theatre and has worked since 2008 with leading opera houses, theatres and festivals across Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, Dutch National Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Stuttgart State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and Southbank Centre in London.
His long-standing artistic collaboration with Kirill Serebrennikov includes productions such as Nabucco, Salome, Don Carlo, Leben mit einem Idioten, BAROCCO, LEGENDE, as well as Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni / Requiem.
Shagalov’s work combines cinematic thinking, live video, photography and digital image technologies into a distinctive visual dramaturgy. Alongside his work as a video artist, he has directed independent theatre projects at Théâtre des 2 Rives in Normandy and Vene Teater in Estonia. His recent projects include Der Schneesturm for Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and the Salzburger Festspiele, Hamlet / Fantômes at Théâtre du Châtelet, Symphony of Shadows with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Wozzeck: Wretches Like Us with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
