Ilya Sha­galov is a vi­deo de­sig­ner, mul­ti­media ar­tist and sta­ge di­rec­tor ba­sed in Ber­lin. He be­gan his ar­tistic ca­re­er at the Mos­cow Art The­at­re and has wor­ked sin­ce 2008 with le­ading ope­ra ho­uses, the­at­res and fes­ti­vals ac­ross Euro­pe, inc­lu­ding the Vi­en­na Sta­te Ope­ra, Ko­misc­he Oper Ber­lin, Dutch Na­ti­onal Ope­ra, Opern­ha­us Zürich, Stutt­gart Sta­te Ope­ra, Ham­burg Sta­te Ope­ra, Théâtre du Châte­let in Pa­ris and So­uth­bank Cent­re in Lon­don.

His long-stan­ding ar­tistic col­la­bora­ti­on with Ki­rill Se­reb­renni­kov inc­lu­des pro­duc­ti­ons such as Na­buc­co, Sa­lome, Don Car­lo, Le­ben mit einem Idi­oten, BA­ROC­CO, LE­GEN­DE, as well as Mo­zart’s Così fan tut­te, Le noz­ze di Fi­garo and Don Gi­ovan­ni / Re­qui­em.

Sha­galov’s work com­bi­nes ci­nema­tic thin­king, li­ve vi­deo, pho­tog­raphy and di­gital ima­ge tech­no­logi­es in­to a dis­tinc­ti­ve vi­su­al dra­matur­gy. Along­si­de his work as a vi­deo ar­tist, he has di­rec­ted in­de­pen­dent the­at­re pro­jects at Théâtre des 2 Ri­ves in Nor­mandy and Ve­ne Te­ater in Es­to­nia. His re­cent pro­jects inc­lu­de Der Schne­es­turm for Düssel­dorfer Scha­us­pi­el­ha­us and the Salz­bur­ger Fest­spi­ele, Ham­let / Fantômes at Théâtre du Châte­let, Symp­ho­ny of Sha­dows with the Ro­yal Phil­harmo­nic Orc­hes­tra and Woz­zeck: Wretc­hes Li­ke Us with the Lon­don Phil­harmo­nic Orc­hes­tra.
