Joël Chapron (born in Paris in 1960) is a specialist in the cinema of Central and Eastern Europe, and, more specifically, that of the former Soviet Union. From 1995 to 2022, he was head of this region at Unifrance Films, responsible for promoting French cinema. A Russian language interpreter and translator, he has subtitled over a hundred films, written numerous articles, given lectures in France and abroad, produced DVD bonus features and authored books published in France and Russia. As a foreign correspondent for the Cannes Film Festival for over 30 years, covering the countries of the former USSR, he served on seven occasions as the official interpreter for the Russian jury members. He is currently a research associate at the Culture and Communication Laboratory at the University of Avignon.
