Ser­gey Ku­cher stu­di­ed ligh­ting de­sign at the Po­lytech­nic Ins­ti­tute in Minsk, Be­larus. He then spent 15 years as the re­sident ligh­ting de­sig­ner at the Pa­lace of the Re­pub­lic, the le­ading con­cert ve­nue of the ci­ty at the ti­me.

In 2016, he jo­ined the Go­gol Cen­ter in Mos­cow, col­la­bora­ting with di­rec­tors and cho­re­og­raphers such as Ki­rill Se­reb­renni­kov, Vla­dis­lavs Nas­tavs­hevs and Ev­ge­ny Ku­lagin. In re­cent years, he has con­ti­nu­ed his work with Ki­rill Se­reb­renni­kov on pro­duc­ti­ons inc­lu­ding »Der schwar­ze Mönch«, »Ba­roc­co«, »Le­gen­de« and »Der Wij« at the Tha­lia The­ater Ham­burg, as well as »De­came­rone« at De­uts­ches The­ater Ber­lin.

Furt­her cre­dits inc­lu­de »Bo­ris Go­dunov« at the Dutch Na­ti­onal Ope­ra & Bal­let in Ams­ter­dam and »Der Schne­es­turm« at the Scha­us­pi­el­ha­us Düssel­dorf. He has cre­ated ligh­ting for ma­jor Euro­pe­an fes­ti­vals and the­at­res, inc­lu­ding the Salz­burg Fes­ti­val, the Avig­non Fes­ti­val, Tha­lia The­ater Ham­burg and the De­uts­ches The­ater Ber­lin.

His ar­tistic app­ro­ach is de­fined by pre­cise arc­hi­tec­tu­ral light com­po­siti­on, at­mosp­he­ric vi­su­al sto­rytel­ling, and a strong in­tegra­ti­on of ligh­ting with sce­nog­raphy and mo­vement.
