Director –  Kirill Serebrennikov
France / Switzerland / Russia, 2022
Drama
Duration: 163 min.
Language: Russian, with English subtitles

Presented in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, Tchaikovsky’s Wife tells the story of Antonina Miliukova, the wife of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Deeply in love with the renowned composer, she finds herself trapped in a marriage that gradually turns into a painful and destructive relationship.

Following its Cannes premiere, the film was screened in many countries around the world but was never released theatrically in Germany. At the Kirill & Friends Berlin Festival, audiences will have the opportunity to see the German premiere of the film’s Director’s Cut, a version never previously shown to the public. Re-edited by Kirill Serebrennikov after the film’s original release, it includes material that was not part of the original cut.

Between realism and dreamlike imagery, the direction distils this poisonous atmosphere through hypnotic long takes.

It’s a bold and stylish work that slips in and out of fantasy.
