By Kirill Serebrennikov, inspired by the work and legacy of Sergey Paradjanov
LEGEND invites us into the visionary world of renowned filmmaker Sergey Paradjanov — a figure celebrated in his homeland but still largely unknown in the West. His films, cited as an influence by world famous artists such as Lady Gaga, evoke the rich ethnic and cultural tapestry of the Caucasus. Through his vivid visual storytelling, Paradjanov brought ancient tales and legends to life on screen.
LEGEND is not another conventional artist’s biography. Serebrennikov’s play works with Paradjanov’s visual language to present his world as a projection of our own desires. The poetic tapestry of the performance becomes a kaleidoscope of color, image, and myth. In ten legends, an infinite metaverse of cultures emerges, in which every single person can exist in their uniqueness. LEGEND is a timeless tale of freedom — and the struggle for it, a celebration of beauty and the ultimate triumph of life over death.
